What is a regenerative blower?

A regenerative blower, or a side channel blower, is a high-pressure fan that repeatedly spins and recirculates air inside itself to create a stronger flow and pressure. They are commonly used for operations like vacuum systems, aeration, pneumatic conveying, and wastewater treatment.

Regenerative blowers operate using a spinning wheel, or impeller, which pulls air in as it spins. As the air moves inside the blower continuously, it gains pressure and speed. The blower then pushes the air out at a higher pressure from before.

Most regenerative blowers can run continuously if properly sized and operated.

Nearly every blower is made from aluminum, while some larger models use cast iron. For specialized applications, stainless steel options are also available.

A significant advantage to regenerative blowers is their simplicity. Not much can go wrong with them, as they operate using few moving parts and require little to  no maintenance. A regenerative blower is a good choice when you need a steady, reliable stream of air in pressure or vacuum with no maintenance.

Keep your blower properly ventilated, clean the inlet filter regularly, and operate it within its recommended pressure or vacuum range. Avoid restricted airflow and excessive loads, which can cause the blower to overheat.

Service life is heavily dependent on the blower’s specific application.  Three to ten years is a broad estimate for a regenerative blower’s service life.

Regenerative blowers are commonly used for operations that require continuous airflow or vacuum, such as aeration, material handling, packaging, and vacuum lifting.

In general if pneumatic requirements fall in the range of a regenerative blower, it is the technology of choice due to simplicity, cost, and lack of maintenance.
